Does this Quesada point make sense

Does this Quesada point make sense

In the continuing drama of the Spider-Man marriage, Joe Quesada (in his always interesting, at the very least, weekly column, Joe Fridays) wondered why people werent discussing a point of his, which he seems to think is a big winner. Says Joe,
What I found interesting is that no one seemed to address a very important point I made last week. Knowing that having a child or getting divorce, annulled, separated, or widowed and all those sorts of things aren’t an option, there is not a single story of a married Peter Parker that can’t be told with a single Peter Parker. On the other hand, the exact opposite isn’t true.
I dont get it.

Does that make sense? Does he have some big winner here? It doesnt seem to make sense to me, as I dont see how that is that strong of a point. I mean, PICK a Spider-Man change. Like the organic webspinners. Is there a story out there with organic webspinner Peter Parker that cant be told with webshooters Peter Parker?

In the alternative, does the fact that you can tell stories with Spider-Man living in Avengers Tower that you cant tell if Spider-Man lives in a shitty apartment make the Avengers Tower thing a better plot device? I dont see how it does.

If its just "The marriage is constraining," then fine, I think people get that - they acknowledge it.

But otherwise, what am I missing here that makes this an awesome point?

Do you know this vegetable Alsande Chawlichya Shenga Long beans Cow pea beans

Do you know this vegetable Alsande Chawlichya Shenga Long beans Cow pea beans

All of you overwhelmed me today. No, you really did. I posted this picture last night and wanted to write the post too. However, I hardly managed to think straight with that sleepy head of mine, let alone writing a full post. So, I said Let me just publish a teaser and see what happens. And what do I get today in the morning? 12 comments! Not one or two, but one dozen! And almost all of you have guessed it right. Well done, Friends. You are smart and you are quick. If you ever entered a quiz contest, and if there were a Buzzer Round in it, you would surely win it. I assure you. So, this post is dedicated to Shilpa, Revathi, Nabeela, KrishnaArjuna, Nandita, Perspective, Faffer, (phew...another five to go) Suhaag, Nandan, Anon, Sumitha, Zoya...and many more who have guessed it right, but have not left a comment.

As Zoya has mentioned, this bean is called Chawlichi Sheng in Marathi. Until I got married, it was never a part of my diet, but very much a part of my vocabulary. That too in the figurative sense. Ok, let me explain it. A slender and tall woman is called Chawlichi Sheng in Marathi. For example, Anna Kournikova can be called a CS, or maybe Malaika Arora, or perhaps Halle Berry (basically all those women who I envy appreciate for their fitness).

Coming back to the long beans, I was saying that I had never eaten or cooked them before marriage, because its not a part of the diet in my parents families. However, after I got married and became a part of a Konkani family, I got to know/eat this vegetable. It makes a regular appearance on my mother-in-laws table. Maybe because I ate it at her place for the first time, I always prepare it the way my MIL does, although it can be cooked the Maharashtrian way too. Heres the way she prepares it.

Recipe for Alsande Upkari (Steam-cooked long beans)

Ingredients:

approx. ¼ kg. Long / cow-pea beans
1 medium sized boiled potato
a generous pinch asafoetida powder
salt to taste

1 tsp oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
3-4 dried red chillis, broken into two-three pieces each

2 tbsp gated coconut for garnishing (optional; I haven’t used)

Method:

1. Wash and top & tail the beans. Cut them in 1 inch long pieces.

2. Cut the potato in cubes. (The size does not really matter here, because the potato is boiled and hence the question of it taking less/more time to cook does not arise.)

3. Heat the oil in a pan. Once it is fairly hot, add the mustard seeds and let them splutter.

4. Add the broken red chillis. After a second or two, add the beans.

5. Sprinkle some water (about two tablespoons for non-stick and ¼ cup for regular pans). Add salt to taste. Stir the beans well and cover the pan with a lid.

6. Open the lid after three-four minutes. Some steam should be gathered inside now. Add the potato pieces.

7. Stir the beans again and let them cook until soft yet crunchy. (Can the beans then be called al dente?)

8. Just before turning the heat off, open the pan and add the asafoetida powder. Stir the Upkari well, put the lid back and turn the heat off. (I know, this is different from the usual hing in the tadka/asafoetida in the hot oil routine, but believe me, it tastes great like this.)

9. Serve after about 1o minutes, so that all the flavours get time to blend well with each other. Garnish it with grated coconut, if you like, before serving.

Alsande Upkari

The traditional practise in Konkani households is to add asafoetida water, which is simply a small piece of asafoetida dissolved in water. However, this means a tiny bit of preparation, and I also sometimes am left with excess of it, which I dont know where to use. So,adding asafoetida powder is the only bit that I do differently from my mother-in-law.

Sending this one over to Kalyn for her Weekend Herb Blogging event.

Does Shah Rukh Khan’s new Raees poster remind you of this iconic Amitabh Bachchan movie still

Does Shah Rukh Khan’s new Raees poster remind you of this iconic Amitabh Bachchan movie still

A few hours ago, Shah Rukh Khan has promised us that he will release a new poster of Raees, ahead of the trailer launch that is happening tomorrow. Since the moment we had seen that exciting teaser of the movie, nearly one and a half year ago, we are just waiting for any tidbit to get about Raees, and be happy with it. After all, Raees has all the ingredients to be the next massy flick after Sultan. True to his word, Shah Rukh Khan released the new poster of the movie that has him looking like a total badass. He has never looked so deadly before, and that sleek beard, and devil-may-care attitude make the poster a perfect tease for the trailer tomorrow.

However the poster also invokes a sense of deja vu in you. You feel that you have seen that blue shirt SRK is wearing in the poster before. Or the way he has places his leg on the arm of the chair. Or basically, his entire body language has that ‘been there seen that’ vibe. So where have seen it before?

As we cracked our heads over it, the image finally made it way into my brain. Of course we have seen it before. In fact, any die-hard Bollywood fan has seen it before. In case, you have still not got it, here is that pose…

Yes, doesn’t Raees’ new poster remind you of this iconic Amitabh Bachchan pose from Deewar? let’s make it easier for you by merging these two pics…

Sharukh-Amitabh

Now tell us whether you find it similar in context? Perhaps Shah Rukh Khan’s character in Raees, Miyaanbhai is a diehard Amitabh fan!

Dont Worry I Got This Responding to Bishop Jacksons Tell Me More Interview on Gay Marriage

Dont Worry I Got This Responding to Bishop Jacksons Tell Me More Interview on Gay Marriage

It was with mounting frustration that I listened to Michel Martins "Tell Me More" broadcast where Bishop Harry Jackson Jr. discussed the topic of gay marriage.  Martin, by no means my favorite host on NPR, is still a capable one, yet she lobbed the softest of softball questions at the Bishop.  Her most challenging questions were couched and tepid and I expected better from her.
To read an entire transcript of the interview, click this link.
For those of you who dont know, Bishop Jackson is the senior pastor for the Hope Christian Church in Maryland.  He is a well-known, widely respected theologian and extremely influential in religious circles.  I have no personal animus against the Bishop, and even from his interview yesterday, it is clear that he is a humble, devoted man.  Im sure hes right about a lot of things.  Except this.  When it comes to gay marriage, hes dead wrong.
Since there were no phone calls allowed or differing points of view expressed, Im going to respond to some of his points, as they seem to reflect the opinion of the larger religious majority.  Who are also wrong, I might add.
The Interview
Bishop Jackson: "I see marriage as a sacred institution."
Schaffer: Since when?  Marriage is not a sacred institution or even a religious institution.  Its a legal agreement that binds two people together in terms of finances, property, and benefits as recognized by the government.  And whats so sacred about it anyway?  Have you checked the divorce statistics lately?  It might be MEANT to be sacred, and people should TREAT it as sacred, but the sad fact is that marriage has been devalued alarmingly over the past century.  Clinging to any other pretense is foolish.
Bishop Jackson:  "Marriage as I understand it, is an architectural blueprint given to us by God to produce certain outcomes that two men or two women cannot really produce. Marriage, I think, is a container that God has ordained to release something in the earth that needs several ingredients, and the last ingredient is the grace of God for an institution that he has created and will bless."
Schaffer: Fancy words and lovely metaphors aside, what I think the Bishop is talking about is reproduction here.  The only outcome that two men and two women cannot produce together are children.  So if marriage is meant for the purposes of childbirth, what about barren couples?  Are they somehow not blessed by God?  Furthermore, if all marriages are blessed by the grace of God, how come so many spouses abuse and murder each other every year?
Bishop Jackson:  "I think that the worst case from my perspective would happen is that were going to have to look at whats taught in schools to children who have slightly different family concepts."
Schaffer:  Right, because all children in schools are currently being taught the concept of a nuclear family that exactly resembles what they have at home.  Who are you kidding?  I guarantee the majority of children in the classrooms today NEED to be taught about "slightly different family concepts" just to try and make sense of what is going on in their homes.  Heres an idea: Instead of worrying about whos going to teach what to the children, we just TEACH THE CHILDREN.  Right now, theres a sore lack of education in this country on all fronts.  I am pretty certain what the kids think of Adam and Steve holding hands is less important than making sure they can READ AND SPELL THE WORDS "Adam" and "Steve."
The Debate About Gay Rights vs. Civil Rights
What I think saddens me the most is that so many African-American religious leaders have come out against Gay Marriage, which is diametrically opposed to their position on Civil Rights.
Im here to tell you right now, without any hesitation, you cannot be in favor of Civil Rights and be opposed to Gay Marriage.  Its that simple.
On March 4, 2013, Bishop Jackson published an article accusing Gay Rights Activists of trying to "hijack" the Civil Rights Movement.  Right Wing Watch does a decent job of smashing his argument by illustrating the similarities in language from cases banning gay marriage to those that once also banned interracial marriage.
Further, the Southern Baptist Convention has adopted a resolution that gay marriage is not a Civil Rights issue.
Religion is the Worm in the Apple
The very notion that religious figures represent any type of moral authority over the rest of us is not only ludicrous, but highly dangerous.  You dont need me to spool out the countless atrocities that the holiest members of every single church on the planet have committed.  You dont need me to tell you that the clergy is infested with pedophiles and the church protects them.  You dont need me to mention how many ministers have been arrested for lying, cheating, and scamming.  You dont need me for that.  You already know it.
So you can see why I refuse to grant them any position of moral superiority.
Despite what the SBC and Bishop Jackson will say, gay marriage is absolutely a civil rights issue.  We are discriminating as a society against our fellow citizens by denying them equal privileges and were doing it out of spite, fear, hatred, and sheer prejudice.
Shame.  Shame, shame, shame, shame, shame on black leaders like Bishop Jackson and those in the SBC who fail to see that.
Shame, shame, shame, shame on ANY American Patriot who would reject the glorious and defining concepts of the United States Constitution for the superstitious writings of an ancient race.
Mark my words, the Supreme Court of the United States will strike down DOMA.
What remains is you asking yourself what you are first and foremost: A lackey of religious doctrine as taught by its leaders and proponents, or an American Citizen committed to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness for All Citizens?
In the immortal words of Chuck D. from Public Enemy: "What Side You On?"
Signed,
Bernard Schaffer
