Dick Fulds Fuzzy Memory and Thoughts on the FCIC
1. This is a totally random, largely inconsequential discrepancy that I just happened to notice in Dick Fulds testimony to the FCIC. But since this is, after all, my blog, Im going to point it out anyway. After telling of a failed attempt to call Tim Geithner on Saturday, September 13th, Fuld told the FCIC (per Dealbook):
“From that weekend to this day I have not had a conversation with Chairman Geithner,” Mr. Fuld told examiners.Oh Dick, you know they keep records of these things, right? What about your call to Geithner after the AIG bailout later that week, when you begged him to "undo" the Lehman bankruptcy (as recounted in Hank Paulsons book)? That call shows up in Geithners call logs from the crisis, on the morning of Friday, September 19th:

2. As to the FCIC more generally, they obviously had several flaws. Not surprisingly, given my earlier post, I didnt find the final report to be terribly useful or reliable. Ive listened to a bunch of the FCIC interviews (great for listening to on the train), and I agree with Yves Smith, who noted that "far too many of the well known individuals included in the roster were economists who were simply not close enough to what happened to provide much in the way of new perspective." What did they really expect to learn about the crisis from Arthur Laffer, or Bob Kuttner?
There were also some glaring omissions in the interviews. Honestly, how is it possible that the FCIC didnt interview Dan Jester? Jester was the point man for the government from Lehman Weekend on, and was probably one of the most important figures in the entire financial crisis. Ken Wilson, another hugely important Paulson adviser at the Treasury, was also somehow not interviewed. Inexplicable.
In general, I think the interviewers tended to waste a lot of time learning how major dealer banks work — which meant that they were often interviewing the wrong person. They also had a structured products expert who frankly didnt seem to know that much about structured products, and was easily confused by structured finance jargon. The main interviewer (at least in the interviews Ive listened to), Chris Seefer, usually had a pretty decent grasp of the markets and financial instruments the FCIC was focusing on, but he was often clearly trying to fit the evidence into a pre-conceived narrative, which wasnt always accurate. Overall, though, Seefer was the most competent interviewer the FCIC had.
As far as I can tell so far, the FCIC didnt unearth very many important documents (although theres a multi-thousand-page SEC submission that looks like it contains some great raw data). So its the interviews, rather than the underlying documents or the report itself, which will likely be the FCICs most lasting contribution.

The claim is that lemons are a natural diuretic, and thus that putting lemon juice under your eyes is somehow a good idea for reducing undereye puffiness.
Okay, first of all, what is a diuretic? A diuretic is a substance that increases the production of urine. Typically, they are used to treat serious medical conditions like heart failure or kidney disease. Because the skin around your eyes is very thin, slight differences in fluid levels will affect this area more significantly. The idea, then is that a diuretic will drain the extra fluid in your eye-area, leaving you with model-perfect undereyes.

Lemon juice does indeed have a mild diuretic effect.There are a lot of different diuretic mechanisms and I cant find a reliable source on the mechanism of lemon juice in particular. However, regardless of the specific mechanism, lemon juices (very, very, very slight) diuretic effect is when consumed. Putting it on your face isnt going to do much of anything.
There are also serious risks to putting citrus on your face. Putting citrus on your face can cause a phototoxic reaction called phytophotodermatitis, an inflammatory reaction that results in bruise-like hyperpigmentation, with the potential for nasty-looking blisters. Its often mistaken for chemical burns. This is not only an ineffective treatment for undereye bags, it is downright dangerous.
Im guessing that Birchbox made this video using the assumption that lemons are natural and therefore cant be harmful. Remember, though, to do your research before sticking random crap on your face.

I have some things health, fitness, and beauty related that I want to share with you guys. I always love to share new health and beauty things I am trying and getting into, and I love to hear what other beauty and health junkies are using and intrigued by as well.
We live in a world where women are photoshopped, airbrushed, and filtered on a regular basis. Sometimes I cant blame anyone for doing that because of how ridiculed we can be if we dont. It is a doubled edged sword that can be debated without end. For me; I am not in the game of doing that because it goes against everything I stand and work hard for, thus I elect to refrain from such drastic measures.
However, I think I have found something just as good: translucent powder by "It Cosmetics". The powder has light reflecting particles so when you are in the sunlight sunlight and other light, it makes your skin look even better.
I absolutely love this product and I am so happy I went on a whim and purchased it. It makes my skin look almost flawless, especially when you add a dash on bronzer on your cheeks.

I went to GNC over the weekend because I had an awesome coupon-- just being a Diva on a Budget, of course. I picked up my vitamins on clearance, my 5HTP, and I think I am going to try the "apple cider vinegar" fad that has been going on.
My friend Gabe convinced me that there is all kinds of benefits from drinking it everyday; but I am struggling! This stuff is so nasty. You are supposed to do 1-2 tablespoons with 8 oz. of water first thing in the morning and then again 1-2 times during the day. It is gross to me though, even with water. I would like to just take it as a shot and be done with it, but I have read not to do that.
Who is on the Apple Cider Vinegar band wagon and do you feel like it has helped and improved your health?

To continue my Diva on a Budget fabulousness this weekend, I had a 20% my total order coupon from Ulta plus lots of points to use. Those coupons only happen once or twice a year so I had to take advantage. My face has been breaking out bad a lot around my mouth and chin lately so I bought a new acne wash face. For a few days now, I have used it twice a day. It has helped without a lot with out drying my skin out.
I am so also trying out Paul Mitchell products for more voluminous hair. In my opinion, the bigger the hair the better. In the above picture of me, I used both the hair spray and daily boost. I like them! I am almost as pleased with the daily boost as I am with Big Sexy Hair. I actually like Paul Mitchells hairspray much better.

Lastly, I tried a new "Skinny girl" cocktail over the weekend. This brand is cheaper than "Skinny Girl", has few less calories, and tastes just as good. When youre in the mood for a cosmo (my personal favorite) this is a great go to!

Did Darren Aronofsky Keep Our Trust with Noah podcasting on The Matineecast
The Christopher Nolan that made Following and Memento is not really the same Christopher Nolan that made the Dark Knight trilogy and Inception. Hes got more money, more trust, more opportunities. Yet, theres a clear connection running through his body of work, the identifiable Nolan-ism that makes us realise that Following and The Dark Knight Rises are made by the same person, instead of feeling like a rote blockbuster made by the same guy thats made 20 blockbusters before that.
And this is the case with Darren Aronofsky and his biblical epic/passion project, Noah. I must admit, had this been made by another person, I wouldnt have been at all interested in it. But because this is a film made by the guy who has given us films like Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler, I was excited to see how hed fare when he was given a few more dollars in his back pocket and the opportunity to tell a tale that would get the tongues wagging - perhaps more so than ever before.
Noah is indelibly a Darren Aronofsky film. It doesnt feel like its cut from the same cloth as Aronofskys other films, but it makes a nice addition to a nice enough patchwork quilt. Aronofsky is the kind of director that we could trust with anything - even The Wolverine, had he chosen to make this film - but Noah seems like the biggest thing weve trusted him with yet. Or is it the biggest film that weve trusted anyone with yet?
Hmmm, one has to ponder.
Noah very much seems like another blockbuster that takes on a familiar story - think Alice in Wonderland, Nolans Dark Knight trilogy etc - and gives it a dark spin for the new age. And in a way, it kind of is. This isnt the colourfully illustrated story filled with animals from near and far that we were taught when we were starting out in school. Also, its not just the story that we were taught. Aronofsky and his frequent collaborator Ari Handel have filled in some gaps, and then added another plot line. And that plot line is the thing that could either make or break the film.
I dont want to give too much away, but lets just say, its a storyline designed to make you feel like a terrible person (hey, Darren, didnt Requiem for a Dream do that anyway?). And it gets really melodramatic, really fast. All of a sudden we have Russell Crowe, who was pulling in some really solid work beforehand, revert back into angry, telephone-throwing Russell Crowe mode. We have Jennifer Connelly only serving the purpose to yell at Russell. We have Emma Watson crying constantly. I dont really have an issue with the direction that Aronofsky was going with this (because it did give me a lot to ponder over), but I do have an issue with the way it was executed.
One word: melodrama.
Not only is there anger, crying, yelling, theres also a sharp turn in the way that Clint Mansell scores the film, going from a thing of beauty to all of a sudden going "BAD THINGS ARE HAPPENING." The film that was so indelibly a Darren Aronofsky film dangerously dips into the kind of rote blockbuster that this film looked like it was going to be, and I felt, for a moment, that Darren was letting us down. Not only that, but the character that Logan Lerman plays, Ham (who is Noahs son), is rather annoying because all he wants is a wife. I can totally see where hes coming from, because it does kind of suck if everyone is hooking up around you and you have no one, but he felt like a character that needed to be in another film. To put it frankly: he built an ark, and he should have gotten over it.
However, all is forgiven when you see what a spectacle this film is. Particularly in the evolution scenes, which were, hands down, the most beautifully done montages I had ever seen. It was just one of those moments where I wanted to stand up and clap and bow down to Aronofskys vision. Weve seen the evolution of the Earth so many times in film, but the two scenes in which Aronofsky time lapses through thousands of years is just achingly beautiful, particularly in the last one. His vision, though it is definitely roughened and toughened for the cynical new world, is something of beauty and a sad kind of relevance.
Yet, would I have Aronofsky continue on the blockbuster path? No way. The Aronofsky I like best is the one that made Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. But its good to see what he can do with a larger canvas - heres hoping he gets a few more opportunities to wield a bigger paint brush.
