Doodle Art for the Heart

Doodle Art for the Heart

While in my heart I wish I was an artist with a talent for painting and drawing, Im just not. I can dream up great things, but when it comes to translating my ideas onto paper Im at a loss. I do however love to doodle. Theres something about doodles that makes me feel okay if theyre not perfect. It has been a long time since Ive spent anytime doodling, but after coming across #doodleadaymarch on Instagram I rediscovered how much I enjoy creating playful doodles. Here are a few that Ive been dreaming up in March.

Would love to connect with you on Instagram and see whats making you smile each day. Follow me here and Ill follow you back.

DIY Felt Flower Wall Art

DIY Felt Flower Wall Art

After a few days of being under the weather, a beautiful no-sew felt flower was just what I needed to brighten my week. This project is very "DO-able" even for a crafting novice. Its also very inexpensive. All you need is a little bit of time. For me it was 2 nap times (thankfully Mr. Jake took a two hour nap the last two days). As a side note I should let you know that Im a pretty slow crafter so you may be able to finish it faster.

I recreated this sweet design after I stumbled upon the beautiful work of Lindsay from Pen & Paint while on Instagram the other day. As I looked through pictures of her drawings and paintings, marveling at her talent and creativity, I was particularly drawn to an image of a sweet little felt flower. I had to have one for myself.

Heres what you need to recreate this fun DIY wall art project:
  • Felt
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • 8 inch embroidery hoop
  • Button

Step 1: Cover your embroidery hoop with fabric and tighten. Cut excess fabric, leaving about 1/2 an inch of fabric (youll glue this down at the end).

Step 2. Cut your first row of petals. My petals were about 1" wide x 1.5" tall. I had 17 total.

Step 3. Cut the remaining rows of petals. I ended up having 8 rows and each one had 17 petals. Each new row of petals should be slightly smaller than the row before it.

Step 4. Once everything was cut, I laid it all out on the table in the same way I was going to assemble and glue it. Once I had it how I liked it, I took each petal, starting with the first row, and hot glued it down onto my embroidery hoop.

Step 5. Add a button or any fun round piece to cover up the middle.

Step 6. Finally, glue down the remaining fabric on the backside of the hoop.

Hope you enjoy your easy, no sew felt flower. Its the perfect addition for any nursery, kids room or empty wall space. I think I might have to make a whole wall of these for my new craft room!

DIY Abstract Art for the Living Room

DIY Abstract Art for the Living Room

Our living room has been in serious need of some art on the walls. I wanted something BIG to take up some space on that ginormous blank wall, and since Ive been wanting to try to DIY some abstract art for oh, like ever, I decided to take this project on myself. (Remember the inspiration I posted about?) I snagged a 24"x36" canvas from Michaels (with a coupon of course!), some cheap-o acrylic paints and a pack of plastic palette knives* (similar) and went to town. Im really happy with how it turned out!

It took a little while to get the hang of it and Ill admit, I had a first effort that was a major fail. I didnt even take photos of it, it was so sad-looking. But you know what? I just painted right over it and got a final result that I love. I have to thank Julia from Cuckoo 4 Design for her super simple abstract art tutorial...it really helped get me going on this second effort.

I dont have a tutorial for you for this because you know what, I had no idea what I was doing until it was all over! So instead, Ill just show you photos of my new painting hanging in my living room :).

It brought some much needed color and a focal point for this space. Whats funny is in some of these pictures, the canvas still looks kind of small on that giant wall, but when youre actually in the room, the size feels perfect.

I love the colors I ended up with on the canvas...blues, pinks, greens, white and GOLD! For some reason, its really hard to photograph metallic paint, but those darker brown areas are gold, promise! ;)

It ties in nicely with the current pillows I have on our couch (which will inevitably change, given my constant itch to redecorate). In case youre wondering, the light blue/white pillows are ones I made from West Elm embroidered dot napkins and the watercolor ones are West Elm Kate Spade Saturday Habanero shams I modified so theyd be throw pillow size.

On a side note, can you spot that little plant on the side table by the chair? Its a jade plant I snagged from CVS of all places for $4 and I just love it!

Isnt it cute?

Heres to hoping I can keep it alive!

A closing thought about the art...I dont consider myself to be an artist, and Im so happy that I decided to try out this abstract art thing anyway. If youre considering trying to do some yourself, DO IT! If its terrible (like my first one was), just keep messing with it until you like it. If I can do this, so can you!

DIY textile art

DIY textile art

Remember when I showed you that pic of that mudcloth I found for a steal on ebay? Well, it arrived in the mail last week. Yesterday I built the frame and this morning it was stapled and placed in its new home above the mantle. Im in love!

It needs more layering, of course, and it has to be hung properly - currently it is sitting on a lucite box used to try out the height! But dont you just love it?!! I have been searching for three years for the right piece to hang in this spot, and there is a great sense of satisfaction at having finally found it. The walls are finally white, we found a sofa last week that D and I both like for this room, and so progress is being made, SLOWLY! Why is it my that projects round here move at a snails pace? Like the barefoot cobblers children, I suppose :)

Im off to source fabrics today for a client, its a perfect day for driving with the wind in your hair.... hope the sun is shining where you are, as well - x am

DIY Wall Art Melted Crayons on Canvas

DIY Wall Art Melted Crayons on Canvas

I bought some canvas a few weeks ago with the intention of painting some really awesome robots for this giant, empty wall in my living room. HeyMatthew and I drew the robots out and bought the paint but after a week of staring at the pencil outlines we decided not to finish them. So, when I was looking around on Pinterest this afternoon and saw the idea for melted crayon art I knew THIS was what we would use or canvases for. Most of the people on Pinterest glue the crayons to the top and then melt them a bit to let the wax run down the canvas in straight lines (see here) but HeyMatthew and I got a bit more creative with ours and actually painted pictures with the melted wax. Take a look...

The first step was to pick out our colors. HeyMatthew and I actually split the box completely in half with our choices. No fighting over colors in this house.

The next step is the easiest and the harderst. Peel those crayons and get to blow drying. I kept burning my finger with the direct finger to crayon to heat action so I eventually started stabbing the crayons with a fork and then heating them up that way. There is definitely a method to doing all of this properly and 4 burned fingers later Id be happy to give you tips if you want them.

HeyMatthew came up with his own method and kept his canvas vertical while melting his crayons. If you want the watercolor smeary look then keep yours flat but if you want the drippy look then this is the way to do it. Also, rotating the canvas every now and then helps keep the drippy things interesting!

Here is the finished product. Arent they a-ma-zing!?!? Dont you think HeyMatthews (the one on the right) looks like a rooster? I think he named his "Chicken Dinner" or something crazy like that. This project took a little over two hours to finish and only cost us about $35 dollars with a 50% off coupon (for the canvas) from Michaels. I read online that the girl who makes the solid crayon drip paintings sells hers for like $250 so when you think about that, ours are totally worth $35. Make your own and let me see them!! Hope everyone had a great weekend! UPDATE FROM JULY 2013- I didnt seal mine but if you try it and find a way to seal yours, please let me know! I get a lot of questions about how to do it and Id love to be able to share tips from someone else. Thanks!

DIY Large Scale Art A Few Styling Tips

DIY Large Scale Art A Few Styling Tips

(Note: Modern Masters provided the Pale Gold metallic paint for this project, but I was not otherwise compensated. All opinions are my own, as always!)

Art. Its a key part of making a room look finished, adds style and personality, and can unfortunately cost a pretty penny for good, quality pieces. Im all about investing in beautiful pieces that you love, but sometimes thats just not in the budget.

Enter DIY art: the affordable alternative that lets you flex your creative muscles as well! Making art can be totally fun and therapeutic even if youre not what youd call, ahem, artistic. You can make some beautiful stuff for your home. Promise.

I talked about a bunch of options for DIY-able art here, so if youre ready to take a project like this on, try my idea below or check out the other ones in that post.

In our dining room update earlier this week, I mentioned that I created these two pieces of large scale art for one of the big ole blank walls in there. Heres where they are:

(*Side note: ugh, I just cant handle that brass chandelier - its high on the list to replace!)

Lets take a closer look at those two pieces. Theyre super simple to make.

Here are the supplies I used if youd like to try your hand at making some of your own:
  • Royal blue acrylic craft paint
  • Modern Masters Pale Gold paint from their Metallic Paint Collection
  • Craft paint brush - I used a fat round one
  • White poster board - yep, nothing fancy here! If you mess up, itll only cost you about 25 cents to start over.
  • IKEA Ribba frame - these are the 24"x35 3/4" size and the poster board fits perfectly in it
I decided to make two patterns: one "U" pattern and one "V" pattern. I sketched these out on a smaller scale first to make sure I liked them and then just went right at it. I chose blue as the predominant color and gold as an accent color, adding it in randomly when it felt right. I was inspired by the mud cloth and shibori looks that are so popular right now and wanted the patterns to look more on the imperfect side. I think I achieved that!

Plus, perfection is overrated sometimes. ;)

After the paint dried, I popped them in the frames, securing them to the mat with washi tape at each corner.

I like how these two complement each other in color and style, but that the patterns are still distinct from one another. Also, that Modern Masters Pale Gold paint was the perfect metallic touch - it ties the art into the nearby kitchen pendants and the overhead lighting in the living room, all of which helps make these rooms look cohesive, but not matchy matchy. The gold paint is such a dream to work with: it goes on smoothly and is a true metallic with beautiful reflective qualities. Open floor plans can be tricky sometimes!

I had a lot of fun figuring out how to style these pieces for photos - styling is always a trial and error process for me - and thought Id share my process as a fun little bonus for this post! I even made a gif for it - I think thats a first for MRFB! If you cant see the gif, just scroll down. The photos are there individually too.

I started with two stacked stools from our bar area and topped them with a potted succulent (jade)...

Added a second potted succulent...

Brought in a dining room chair...

Then a pillow...

And finally, one more plant for good measure.

Im not an expert styler by any means, but Ive learned a few things that are important to make vignette look great:

  1. Always include something living - either a plant or flowers.
  2. Vary the textures. Here Ive mixed in metal, wood and soft fabrics.
  3. Gather items in groups of threes.
  4. Mix up the height of objects.

I hope youll try some DIY art! Its a fun project that can totally transform a space.

Have a great weekend, yall!
